Co-belligerents participate in a war to help their main belligerent win its objective.

A character may join a war as co-belligerent in 2 ways:

  • automatically as a diplomatic obligation. examples: a co-national is being attacked triggering the national defensive pact or your nation superior is starting a war which automatically brings you in, as its your obligation as a vassal.
  • by responding positively to a "call-to-arms" request. In this case it is not obligatory to participate, and the call-to-arms is only possible in certain specific situation where the participation of the co-belligerent can be legitimate. examples: a vassal state can call-to-arms its liege.

Co-belligerents are not affected by war type-specific effects. If their main belligerent wins, they simply earn a bonus of +100 Politics Points. If their main belligerent loses, nothing happens to them.

A co-belligerent may also be individually defeated by reaching 0 of morale or by capitulating.

When defeated, the co-belligerent is taken out of the war: hostilities between him and every belligerent of the other side are ended, and a temporary one sided right-of-passage is also granted to them.

A defeated co-belligerent must also pay war reparations to the main belligerent of the other side, but the treaty remains pending until the war is ended. If the war is won by its side, the obligation to pay war reparations is cancelled. If his side loses, then the treaty takes effect.
